The Episcopal Church Women of Christ Church Frederica recently awarded its first scholarship from the “Scholarship for Women Fund,” which has been years in the making and aims to support the educational endeavors of local young women.

Maggie Holt, who will start her sophomore year at the University of Georgia this fall, has been awarded the fund’s first scholarship.  “We could not be more pleased to have Maggie Holt selected as our first recipient,” said Jane Watson, President of Episcopal Church Women, in a press release. “Few young women have demonstrated a greater commitment to their church and broader community while maintaining an impeccable academic record than has Maggie.”

Holt, a member of Christ Church Frederica, graduated from Frederica Academy in 2017. She’s a former member of the Pirates of the Spanish Main, a local service sorority for high school students, and served as president of her high school’s service council. She also volunteered with The Gathering Place’s youth ministry, as well as through her church.

“Perhaps the most impactful lesson I have taken away from my time in the Episcopal Church is how to serve and love one another,” Holt said in the release. Over the past 15 years, women at Christ Church have made donations to help establish the scholarship program for local female students. In partnership with the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation, the initiative provides a $2,500 scholarship to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree at an academic or technical college or university. The student must be Episcopalian and a resident of Glynn or McIntosh counties.

“This effort is a great example of how the Coastal Georgia Foundation can work with other organizations and individuals in our community to accomplish meaningful, impactful and, often, complicated objectives,” said Paul White, president and CEO of the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation. “I am so proud that we could be a part of the team that made this scholarship a reality, not just for this year, but in perpetuity.” Watson said Holt perfectly exemplifies the kind of young woman the Episcopal Church Women of Christ Church Frederica aimed to help through this initiative.“Maggie embodies precisely what we were hoping to accomplish through this effort,” she said.

The Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation will give out a record-setting total in grants this year to programs that serve some of the community’s most vulnerable populations.

This year three very worthy organizations received grants from the Raymond and Elizabeth Baumel and Abernathy Fund for Animal Welfare. 

The Halsey Family Scholarship Fund recently made awards to two worthy students.

As the result of a successful 3rd Annual Conservation Donors Roundtable hosted by the Foundation and Stewards of the Georgia Coast, more than 100K was raised for coastal preservation to support tracking and management of migratory shore birds, sea turtles, the gopher tortoise and the indigo snake, among others.  Funders active in coastal preservation enjoyed the various presentations by Mark Dodd a Senior Wildlife Biologist with the Nongame Conservation Section at the Georgia DNR in Brunswick, Dr. Chris Jenkins the Chief Executive Officer of the Orianne Society and Tim Keyes a wildlife biologist with DNR's Nongame Conservation Section.  Our very own Dr. S. Lloyd Newberry who holds Doctorate degrees from UGA in zoology, science education and research design, provided information and responded to questions related to his involvement with the indigo snake.

Pictured below are two mules purchased for the DNR to assist in monitoring of sea turtle nesting and strandings on Ossabaw Island and Little Cumberland Island.

It was a packed house at the 3rd Annual Conservation Donors Roundtable last Thursday, hosted by the Foundation and Stewards of the Georgia Coast.  Titled, "A Tale of Two Turtles," the evening centered around conservation stories of two of coastal Georgia's most charismatic wildlife species, the loggerhead sea turtle and the gopher tortoise. 

A newly established scholarship fund created by the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women is being inaugurated this year. Annually, the Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women will provide $2,500 to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree through an academic or technical college or university. The student must be of the Episcopal faith and hale from Glynn or McIntosh County.

"Many of our Christ Church women have, over the last fifteen years, donated to this wonderful effort to establish a scholarship program for our young ladies. The fruit of our gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship we honor those who came before us and saw this as just a dream…….but now it is a reality and we could not be more pleased." noted Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women.

Applications may be accessed via the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation website (www.coastalgeorgiafoundation.org) and are due no later than April 21, 2018. Candidates will be screened and interviewed by a scholarship committee and the award will be made in May.
